FAQ about Turnitin Similarity and AI Reports
Everything you need to know about T-checker and Turnitin AI Checker reports.
1. Why doesn’t T-checker add my paper to the Turnitin AI Detector?
T-checker is designed to analyze papers without storing them. Your document is never saved or indexed in your university’s database, no matter how many times you run a check.
2. What does *% mean in my Turnitin AI report?
After July 16, 2024, Turnitin AI Checker displays *% when AI-generated content is estimated between 1–19%. Scores of 0% or 20% and above are shown as exact values. This approach helps account for potential detection inaccuracies. If your school does not require a strict 0% AI score, a *% result is generally acceptable.
3. Are T-checker AI results the same as my college’s Turnitin AI Detector?
If the version you check on T-checker matches the version you submit to your university, the AI scores should be very similar. However, even small edits made after checking can affect AI percentages, so it’s best to recheck your paper after revisions.
4. Is my reference list included in the plagiarism rate?
No. T-checker excludes references from similarity calculations, following standard academic and journal practices.
5. Why does T-checker show a low AI score, but GPTZero shows high?
T-checker uses careful thresholds to avoid falsely flagging student work. A low AI score ensures fair grading, even if partial AI tools were used.
6. Why didn't my AI report generate?
AI analysis may fail if your document exceeds 29,999 words, is below 320 words, or isn't in English/Spanish. Otherwise, try resubmitting your file.
7. Can I check a paper that’s already in Turnitin?
If your paper has already been submitted to Turnitin through a college platform such as Canvas, T-checker may show a higher plagiarism score. However, Turnitin AI Detector analysis will still function normally.
8. Why am I flagged as AI when I didn’t use ChatGPT?
AI detection is not perfect. Tools like Quillbot or Grammarly, as well as highly formal or formulaic writing, can trigger Turnitin AI–generated or AI-paraphrased flags. Simplifying complex sentences or varying sentence structure may help reduce false positives.
9. Why do previously clean sections get AI-flagged after edits?
AI detection evaluates the entire paper context, not just flagged sentences. Changes in one section can affect AI scoring elsewhere, so a previously unflagged paragraph may later be marked. Flags aren't permanent and can shift with revisions.
10. Which languages does T-checker support?
Our similarity checks cover 30+ languages, including English, Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and Japanese. AI detection works only in English and Spanish.
11. What if I miss downloading the report within 24 hours?
Reports are automatically deleted after 24 hours for privacy. If you miss this window, the original can't be retrieved, but a copy is always sent to your registered email.
12. Will my AI score stay at 0% in Turnitin AI Checker forever?
Turnitin AI Checker is updated regularly. While your current 0% score may change with future detection updates, these changes will not affect submissions that have already been graded or accepted.
